ABSTRACT: This work aims to determine the Hubble constant and the age of the universe through the observation of gravitational lenses. Phenomenon predicted by Albert Einstein in 1915 in The Theory of General Relativity - proved in 1919 during a total eclipse of the Sun, observed in Sobral, Ceará (Eddington, 1920). Deviations from light rays can generate multiple images of a source or even distort its shape. A Gravitational Lens is formed due to a distortion in spacetime caused by the presence of a mass body between an object and the observer. This project, started in March 2019, aims to use this variability using data obtained from light curves to determine signal delays between components of various quasars using algorithms and mathematical techniques. The systems that were studied in this project were the gravitational lens: HE0435-1223, HS 2009 + 1914, RX J1131-1231, SDSS J1001 + 5027 and SDSS J1206 + 4332. Thus, the Hubble constant can be calculated knowing that it is proportional to the dispersion velocity of the lens galaxy and inversely proportional to the signal delay of its components. Thus, knowing the delay between signals A and B of two or more quasar components, the Hubble constant can be calculated. Since the inverse of it has a time dimension, one can thus estimate the age of the universe. |
